Visibility & Noticeability

Sign elements & text fonts should be sized one inch for every 10 feet of viewing distance. Unobstructed line of sight between an intended observer and the sign, and preferably eye level for maximum exposure is recommended. Incorporating design elements that help signs stand out from the surrounding landscape include: contrasting color, shape, motion, and images.

Legibility & Readability

Type-style selection is critical to the effectiveness of a sign. The proper font should convey the desired image without sacrificing the ability to distinguish individual letters. Many script and specialty type-styles are difficult to read, especially over greater viewing distances. Signs should readily convey the intended keywords in the massage, emphasized with larger letters, style, spacing, color or a combination of the mentioned.
